Is immigration affecting job prospects in the UK?
While immigration is a very difficult subject to discuss it is one which has been brought up by the Labour Party in the context of British jobs for British workers, something we have heard of before but never seen any action. The reason why there has been no action is pure and simple, it is against the EU's open door policy which lets EU citizens move around Europe with the same rights as they have in their homeland.
When the UK was booming there were jobs for every one as workers from overseas continued to flood into the country. Many took on low paid work because these were the only positions left and many UK citizens would not move to the bottom of the employment ladder. However, now that we have seen the economy grinding to a shuddering halt there is a call to limit immigration into the UK to secure the job market for UK citizens.
How bizarre then that many Polish immigrants in the UK are actually going back home where the economy is fairing better than most and the UK does not look such an interesting prospect as it once did.
