Will the US presidential race impact upon the UK?

As we enter the final stretch of the US presidential race focus is now changing towards what if any impact the forthcoming change will have on the UK and the UK economy. The only real short-term consequences lie within the rescue package and concerns that Obama may not be as aggressive in his approach to the package as McCain might have been. Any reduction in urgency in this area could have serious consequences for not only the US economy but the worldwide economy as a whole.

Those who cast their minds back will be aware that Gordon Brown has already nailed his support to the Obama mast during his visit to the US earlier this year. He must now be hoping that his favoured candidate is able to push to the finishing line and bring home the greatest prize in US politics.

Whether the UK would enjoy the so-called "special relationship" with the US after the new president is sworn in remains to be seen as there has been a gradual deterioration in the relationship since the days of Margaret Thatcher. The UK seems more firmly aligned to Europe at the moment which could bring about some very awkward situations in the future.
