Has Labour retaken Glenrothes?
The Glenrothes by-election has seen neither party convinced whether they have won or lost, so close is the vote in this Scottish heartland. While only a few weeks ago there seemed no chance of a Labour victory the sudden increase in Gordon Brown's worldwide popularity and the rescue package in the UK seemed to have come to his rescue. However, the SNP has been very active in the region and while they have been very confident in the press they too are not totally convinced that they have taken the Labour stronghold next door to Gordon Brown.
Whether this potential change in Glenrothes has any real effect on Gordon Brown's short-term future remains to be seen as he has undergone something of a character revival over the last few weeks. In many ways, although it may sound a little strange, Gordon Brown has nothing to lose and everything to win while Alex Salmond has anything to lose and literally nothing to win.
The result is due around 1 AM on Friday morning and will be eagerly awaited by many in the UK. On an economic front today has been a fairly good day for Gordon Brown with the surprise 1.5% reduction in UK base rates.
