Gordon Brown warns America against protectionism
Gordon Brown has put himself on a collision course with the new US president in waiting Barrack Obama. Not only has he tried to ride roughshod over the US by attempting to claim the glory for the rescue package but he is also now suggesting that the US government is moving towards a period of protectionism which was last seen in the 1930s.
It seemed as though Gordon Brown was prompted by rumours that Barrack Obama is looking to bailout the US car market, with General Motors in particular having a really difficult time at the moment. However, for a man who is looking to keep the US government on side he is risking the close relationship the US and UK has had for many years, by attempting to dictate US policy towards its own industrial sectors.
It is rumoured that some of the US government are growing increasingly concerned about the fact that Gordon Brown appears to be claiming credit for everything from the rescue package to the equity investments in the banks to the release of more funds to the money market. It seems that everything which is good at the moment is connected to Gordon Brown and everything which is bad is in some way connected to the US. The US government will not stand for this for very much longer.
