Is Alistair Darling the next Cabinet Minister to go?

It is common knowledge in political circles that the relationship between Gordon Brown and his Chancellor Alistair Darling has dropped to record lows of late. Amid suggestions that Gordon Brown is trying to dictate the policy and direction of the Treasury, Alistair Darling has recently hit back suggesting that yet more debt, bearing in mind the current situation in the UK, would be the wrong move.

This is totally at odds with Gordon Brown who has been hinting for days now of a multibillion pound tax refund for the lower paid ahead of Christmas. Unless he can push through this policy in the next few weeks it seems unlikely that he will be able to bring any seasonal joy to millions in the UK. As Gordon Brown knows, a dispute with your Chancellor can often escalate into a more serious issue and have a major impact on the way in which government is run. Fresh from the years of Gordon Brown and Tony Blair fighting, this would be the last straw for many in the Labour Party and alert voters to the fact the party may be split. Will Alistair Darling be pushed, will he walk or will he stay?
