The UK German feud goes on

The UK ambassador to Germany has this evening submitted a formal complaint regarding the public and damning attack on Gordon Brown regarding his role in the EU economic revival plan. Members of the German Ministry were quoted as ridiculing his VAT reduction plan and the substantial increase in UK debt. Even though the German government openly attacked the plan they have since signed up to a similar rescue package for the European economy.

There is very much a power struggle in Europe at the moment and Gordon Brown seems to have caught the ear of the French president Sarkozy and together they appear to be leading the EU revival. Historically France and Germany have both been close partners in the EU, very much to the detriment of the UK in past controversial votes. It would appear this time that Gordon Brown has turned the tables on his German counterparts and has received much support after the unprovoked and unnecessary attack by a fellow EU member country.

Whether this attack on Gordon Brown's economic prowess will have any long-term implications for his standing in the UK remains to be seen but there is no doubt it was a blot on an otherwise exemplary copybook of late.
