What has happened to Alistair Darling?

Chancellor of The Exchequer Alistair Darling appears to have gone into hiding over the last few weeks with Gordon Brown seemingly taking control of the economic policies and strategies of the UK. This is very much at odds with Gordon Brown's own stint in the Treasury where he had constant battles with Tony Blair and refused to give any power to the Prime Minister. We only ever seem to see Alistair Darling as and when there is bad news to announce as the good news is always given to the press by Gordon Brown

This has prompted many to suggest that Alistair Darling is literally on the verge of quitting or being sacked from the government as it looks as if he has served his purpose. As we saw earlier this year, Gordon Brown decided against a reshuffle in the Treasury at the last cabinet reshuffle, but there is intense speculation that Alistair Darling will either go in the meantime or at the next Cabinet reshuffle. He appears to have lost faith in Gordon Brown and a number of heated debates over the last few weeks seem to have put the final nail into the coffin of their friendship.

Quite how Alistair Darling will be remembered is difficult to say as he has been somewhat overshadowed by his predecessor at the Treasury.
