Gordon Brown comes in for yet more criticism from the IMF
Gordon Brown will today be wondering what the IMF has against him with further criticism of his fiscal stimulus policy in the UK and in particular his decision to reduce VAT. One of the top economists at the IMF has issued a very public and very damning appraisal of Gordon Brown's recent tactics and policies suggesting they have done little to revive the UK economy. Those who follow the site will also be aware that the UK has been singled out as potentially the weakest economy in the developed world and the least likely to experience a short sharp bounce when economies finally recover.
There has been much consideration of the substantial increase in national debt in the UK which is set to hit £1 trillion over the next two years and could literally take nearly a decade of increased taxes to pay back. Just prior to the "Brown bounce" there had been severe criticism of an apparent scorched earth policy but this had been dismissed as sour grapes by the government. If the IMF and a number of other leading economic experts are correct the UK economy could be in serious trouble for some time to come.
