Is Alistair Darling putting his job and reputation on the line?
With news that UK government is seriously considering a new bailout of the banking sector there is concern that Alistair Darling is putting both his job and reputation on the line. In the minds of many economic experts Alistair Darling has been seen as a "yes man" for Gordon Brown, often left to take the rap when things do not go to plan. However, it looks as though Alistair Darling is set to take the lead on this new initiative and stamp his authority on the old offices of Gordon Brown.
The Chancellor Alistair Darling is sure to face serious criticism for his plans as a number of sectors of the UK economy have been crying out for extra funding only to be refused on the basis that liquidity is very tight. If further billions of pounds are poured into the UK banking sector with no benefit to other areas of the economy and the consumer, this could draw down the curtain on a difficult period in Alistair Darling's life.
Gordon Brown seems to have a knack of appearing at the good times and disappearing when there are difficult decisions to be made, a criticism which was aimed at him during his partnership with Tony Blair. Quite who will get the upper hand over the coming weeks should make for a very interesting time in UK political circles.
