Scrap metal thefts increase as the economy plummets

As seems to happen in times of economic hardship fraudulent activity and con artists seem to come out in great numbers with the latest scam involving the theft of scrap metal for resale. The Home Office has today issued a report suggesting the problem is getting worse and has increased by over 150% in the last two years. The cost to the country is estimated at around £360 million and likely to move higher the longer the recession lasts.

The Home Office also announced the creation of a pilot specialist police force to tackle the problem, such are their concerns for the future, and bring these thieves to justice. However, with many across the UK desperate for income it would appear that the pull towards criminal activity is greater than the threat of prosecution. While this situation remains the police may well be fighting a losing battle, at least in the short to medium term.

While scrap metal theft is just one of many scams being carried out across the UK today, it is essential that the UK consumer is extra vigilant with regard to fraudulent activity. There are many new and unusual ways of trying to extrapolate money from consumers in the current economic climate and as ever, the criminals appear to be one step ahead of the authorities!
