Nissan cuts 25% of its Northeast workforce

News that car manufacturer Nissan is to make 25% of its workforce in the north-east of England redundant has sent shockwaves around the industry and the north-east in particular. Car manufacturing has been a major element of the replenishment of the area which took decades to recover from the death of mining. While the news does not come as a total surprise there had been little notice that anything was imminent and many in the area will now be forced to move on to benefits.

Not only does the company have a major factory in Sunderland but it also has outlets in other areas of the north-east, an area of the country which has been prone to heavy unemployment in the past. This is also a Labour heartland and will cause serious ructions in the Labour Party where many are starting to turn on the Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Seeing that many of their Parliamentary seats could be in jeopardy at the next general election this could be the straw which broke the camel's back and could see Gordon Brown come under further pressure from within his own party.

Car manufacturing has become a major industry in the north-east of England and many believe that unless the industry bounces back in the short to medium term we could see further job cuts.
