Sellafield joins the wildcat strikes

As predicted, a number of new wildcat strikes have emerged today in response to the government's firm approach to the problem of foreign workers in the UK. Gordon Brown and Lord Mandelson stand accused of a heavy-handed approach to the problem at the weekend when they gave no hope or support to the reunions or employees of the UK. There are concerns that the thousands of UK workers now on picket lines will cause serious disruption to the UK economy and place further pressure on business levels.

The fact that Sellafield is the U.K.'s leading nuclear power station has also been recognised by the authorities with many suggesting this particular action has been taken to force the government's hand. However, there were some bizarre accusations over the weekend that the UK unions had actually negotiated on behalf of the Italian workers in question with regard to pay levels and pay conditions. The unions have used this particular disclosure to confirm their action is not aimed at protectionism but more the fact that UK workers are apparently being barred from applying for a number of positions with foreign companies working in the UK.

The unions, the government and employees around the UK seem to be firmly entrenched in their positions and views and it could take a substantial move from at least one party to find a resolution to this major problem.
