Has the ongoing economic downturn brought old Labour traits to the surface?
As the UK economy wrestles with one of the most difficult downturns in recent history there are suggestions that the situation has exposed old Labour party traits of excess spending and excessive debt. These were the main characteristics of the Labour government back in the 1970s and fed the growing power of the Conservative party within the UK political scene. Many people are starting to see similarities with the 1970s as debt reaches record levels, strikes become more common and the UK economy is in a serious downturn.
Since the 1970s we have seen a Labour Party which has been completely revamped as well as the emergence of "new Labour" which is now being revealed as nothing more than a sham. Despite numerous Labour Party attempts to change its image with UK voters the party is still backed by the unions of the UK which has placed the government in a number of difficult situations. Many believe that Gordon Brown, while initially appearing to benefit from the UK recession, is now suffering from decisions he made in his long tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Even though the PM has managed a number of escape acts over the last few years, there are very few who believe that he can avoid defeat in the next election.
