Alistair Darling accuses US politicians of protectionism

Alistair Darling as today stepped up his attack on the US government and the enforced protectionism small print in the various rescue packages in play. However, many people believe that his comments are purely a public relations stunt to try and appease the UK public because everyone knows that the US authorities have chosen the protectionism route and are unlikely to change his view because of the UK government. However, on a longer-term basis Alistair Darling would appear to be putting the "special relationship" between the UK and US at serious risk.

In a frightening step back in time to the 1930s and the great US depression, which quickly spread into a worldwide depression, the US government is again copying policies of the time and introducing a "buy American" policy. Many believe that the protectionism policy of the 1930s exacerbate the problem at the time and led to a deeper depression than would normally have been expected. It would appear obvious that global trade will reduce over the coming months which will affect both cash flow between countries and trade levels.

The main problem with protectionism is the fact that when one country introduces such a policy each and every country around the world has little choice but to follow suit to protect its own workforce and economy.
