UK unions threaten rail disruptions as job security brought into question
The RMT union has today announced plans to ballot 3500 workers in relation to potential job losses after Stagecoach and rival Go-Ahead Group issued warnings on the state of the UK rail network and the potential for passenger volumes to fall in the short to medium term. The unions have approached the companies in question with regard to job security for their members although no formal comment has been issued and the unions are now looking at potential strike action.
Slowly but surely, after years of working together, the unions and businesses throughout the UK seem very much to be at loggerheads with the suggestion that some companies are using the economic downturn to reduce staffing levels. However, there is no doubt that UK train passenger volumes are under pressure and the return on investment for the significant funds invested over the last few years has reduced of late.
The potential strike could paralyse large areas of the southern train network and potentially cause massive disruptions into and out of London. Union power has been coming more to the forefront over the last few weeks as job losses and below inflation pay rises are becoming more commonplace.
