Alistair Darling confirms he has issues with Gordon Brown
The Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling has today opened old wounds by suggesting that he has issues with Gordon Brown and the way in which the recession is being handled. It appears to be common knowledge that Alistair Darling is one of a group of MPs who has strongly suggested that Gordon Brown apologised to the UK public in his US speech although this appears to have fallen on deaf ears. A number of political observers believe that Alistair Darling has sensed his opportunity for revenge on Gordon Brown after a very difficult tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
While Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling were seen as the best of friends prior to Darling's appointment as Chancellor of the Exchequer this friendship has very much fallen by the wayside as difficult decisions have been faced over the last 18 months. On a number of occasions Alistair Darling has been left to take the flak while Gordon Brown has readily stepped in to take the praise when on offer.
While openly the vast majority of Labour MPs are very supportive of Gordon Brown, in private there is a battle behind the scenes with a number of prominent MPs stepping forward to stake their claim as the next leader of the Labour Party. Many MPs have also written off the next general election and are making plans for a term in opposition.
