Please concentrate on the UK economy Mr Darling!
While Gordon Brown has been touring the world preaching about economic prowess it now appears that Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has now taken on this role within the EU. Despite the ongoing collapse of the UK economy, increased unemployment and substantially weakened fund flows in the financial sector, Alistair Darling is now urging his EU counterparts to help bail out weaker eastern European EU members. Surely the UK government should be concentrating on the UK economy during these difficult times?
Whether Alistair Darling is attempting to bring a team mentality into the EU, at a time when it is obvious that many EU partners are looking after their own economies, remains to be seen but his suggestion that the European Central Bank emergency fund should be increased from the current £25 billion to cover a forecast £100 billion combined budget shortfall for eastern European countries appears to miss the point. The UK budget deficit appears to be increasing day by day and UK national debt is set to hit £2 trillion and possibly higher over the next two or three years.
The ongoing attempt to project the UK as a major leader in the worldwide economy may well be plausible in more traditional economic times but at this moment the UK economy is in desperate need of concentration and focus by the UK authorities.
