Why playing fantasy football could be expensive!
There has been an explosion in the number of "fantasy football leagues" in the UK and around the world over the last few years. While many of these competitions are free to enter there are a number that charge a small monthly fee to cover expenses and also increase the prize pot at the end of the season. However, if you use your credit card to pay the monthly fee you need to be aware of any potential extra charges!
It is not widely known but many credit card companies in the UK decided to treat gambling transactions as "near cash" from 2007 onwards which effectively meant that any gambling transactions would incur the same fees associated with a credit card cash withdrawal. As a consequence you could be charged anything from £1.50 to £6 per transaction on top of your monthly subscription. Over the year this can add up to a significant increase in your "fun money" subscription to fantasy football leagues.
If you also use your credit card to deposit funds into your online gambling account then you also need to beware of the potential extra costs which some, but not all, UK credit card providers will charge.
