Identity theft 'is Britain's most feared crime'

ID fraud, which can see thieves take out credit cards in another person's name, is Britain's most feared crime. This was the main finding of a new report from credit card firm American Express - which found that 43 per cent of people worried about the fraud.By contrast, just 41 per cent said that they were concerned about street crime, while 25 per cent feared alcohol-related crime - down from 35 per cent a year ago.The number of people who worried about burglary was found to be biggest in London and the north west (37 per cent), and around 25 per cent said that they were concerned about criminals breaking in to or vandalising their car.Commenting on the results, Chris Rolland at American Express commented: "As fast-paced working life drives more people to rely on technology in the way they manage their lives, so the safety landscape is changing and ID theft is becoming a bigger issue year on year."The credit card firm derived its report by interviewing 2,000 Britons about their crime worries.
