UK government set to ban credit card cheques

In a major crackdown on the credit card industry it has been revealed that the UK government is set to outlaw the use of credit card cheques. The cheques are often used as an alternative to credit cards where the card itself may not be acceptable by a retailer or tradesperson. However, many people are unaware that these particular types of cheque attract handling charges as high as 3% as well as interest often in excess of 20%.

It is not common knowledge, but consumers who use credit card cheques as they would a credit card will not be afforded the same consumer protection as payment by the credit card itself. It has also been revealed that UK credit card companies earned around £570 million last year from fees and interest on credit card cheques alone.

The main problem the UK authorities have with the credit card companies is the fact that credit card cheques are often sent out unsolicited, which can often tempt customers into purchases they would not normally contemplate. The government is also looking at the automatic increase in credit card limits amid suggestions that credit card companies regularly increase customer limits without prior notification or permission.
