£640 million earmarked for Manchester recycling operation
In what is by far and away the largest individual recycling project undertaken by the UK government, over £640 million of private finance initiative funding will be winging its way to Manchester in the short term. The deal will see the creation of a state-of-the-art recycling centre which is very much in line with the UK government's ongoing Green strategy, with hopes that it will increase recycling rates in the city from 30% to 50% by 2015.
It is estimated that upwards of 5000 jobs will be created during the construction phase and a further 116 permanent jobs in the longer term. The city itself handles in excess of 1,000,000 tonnes of rubbish a year and the ability to recycle the vast majority will not only assist the environment but would save millions upon millions of pounds for the council. The EU will also be very happy to see such a move by the UK authorities with substantial fines being handed out around Europe for those countries unable or unwilling to abide by previously agreed recycling rates.
There are hopes that this is the first of many recycling ventures across the UK which should in due course reduce overall waste disposal costs, with the hope that savings will filter through to the consumer.
