UK government to invest tens of millions into UK broadband

The UK government has today confirmed that tens of millions of pounds will be put aside to finance the U.K.'s digital revolution. The recent Digital Britain report highlighted the need for significant investment and improvement in broadband and mobile services throughout the country and the government has finally promised to assist. Initially, much of the investment required was set to be provided by British Telecom which has promised billions of pounds for the creation of the U.K.'s first fibre-optic nationwide network.

While UK broadband is available throughout many parts of the UK there are substantial rural areas that have been starved of investment and capacity for some time. While the UK authorities are now willing to put hard cash into the venture the various 3G service providers in the UK have been promised an indefinite extension to the licenses they acquired in 2000, in exchange for further investment. While the move has been welcomed across the business spectrum we have been here before and there are concerns about how forthcoming various private companies and the UK authorities will be when the actual funds are required.

While the UK has seen significant improvement in broadband services over the last decade, and is well in advance of many countries around the world, the network has fallen behind some of the world's leading developed countries since the onset of the credit crunch.
