House of Commons authorities call in police
It has been revealed that the House of Commons authorities have called in the Metropolitan police to investigate the leaking of expense claims by Cabinet ministers today. The claims were revealed by the Telegraph newspaper with suggestions with political circles that there is a political bias. However, even the Telegraph newspaper, traditionally a Conservative supporter, has revealed that more expense revelations will be printed over the coming weeks regarding all political party.
Interestingly, the revelation that the House of Commons authorities have called in the police comes at a time when rumours are circulating regarding a public complaint about MPs expenses. There is a suggestion that one particular cabinet minister has been the subject of a public complaint to the police and the authorities are considering whether to pursue this investigation.
Today has seen all of the government heavyweights wheeled out in what is effectively a damage limitation exercise. However, there are many who believe that the revelation of certain expense claims, both by the book and a number of errors, have already turned public opinion against the political circus in the UK. With more revelations to follow there are serious concerns about the stability of the UK government.
