MPs move to introduce new expenses system
MPs and the authorities within the House of Commons have today issued a statement which confirms that a new separate body will be introduced later this year to overlook the expenses system. While the whole system is due to be revamped in late 2009 and early 2010 there are serious concerns amongst the voting public that MPs are living the high life while many in the UK are struggling to make ends meet.
As we have covered on a number of our posts of late, a number of MPs have been the subject of media articles and media speculation regarding their expenses going back three or four years. There are literally millions upon millions of pounds at stake and the expenses claimed by MPs, totally within the rules, have angered many voters across the country. The situation has become the focal point of each and every media channel in the UK placing significant pressure on the government, MPs and the authorities of the House of Commons.
Indeed the police have already been called in to consider how a copy of MPs expenses was obtained by the Daily Telegraph. This is a situation which has been ongoing for many months and will be in the headlines for some time to come.
