Thames Water sues over magazine criticism

In a move which has surprised many in the investment industry it has been revealed that Thames Water is to sue a magazine over an article which suggested the company was "useless". The article in question allegedly insinuated that despite the wettest August for over 100 years, Thames Water had been at fault for significant water supply problems amongst its customers. The company is suing the magazine for libel damages of more than £300,000 in what many see as a test case for the future.

A variety of UK energy providers have come under significant pressure and been the subject of significant criticism over the last few years. Various issues such as supply, prices and customer services have risen to the surface prompting an array of less than complementary articles. However, it is relatively unheard of for companies such as Thames Water to be suing a magazine over a particular article even though there have been issues regarding libel and alleged defamation in the past. Aside from the fact that the magazine stands to lose over £300,000 plus court costs it also opens Thames Water up to potential cross-examination in the UK courts.

It will be interesting to see what information and details are released into the public domain!
