Do you need a smart meter?

The subject of smart energy meters is gripping the UK with potential cost savings in the region of £3 billion per year up for grabs. However, do we really need smart meters in the UK?

When you consider the simple question "Do you actually know what you pay of your electricity?", the answer is probably no. The vast majority of people in the UK have no idea of the tariff they are on or the unit price they pay for their electric, gas and other energy supplies. The truth is that it would make a difference if you were able to see how much energy your washing machine uses, your television uses, your lights use and other products around the home. This would also allow many people to plan further ahead and budget their energy use in line with their ability to pay.

However, while there are potentially significant benefits to the introduction of these smart meters yet again the issue which could take up to 10 years to complete if it ever goes ahead. We have seen many energy-saving plans and schemes come and go, we have seen promises made and broken but ultimately the cost of energy in the UK continues to rise higher and higher. Anything which could help the traditional UK consumer would be a massive plus point!
