The Daily Mail looks at private prosecutions against MPs
In a startling development in the MP's expenses saga it has been revealed that the Daily Mail newspaper has teamed up with The Taxpayer's Alliance in a bid to raise significant funds to pursue a number of private prosecutions against a band of MPs. It seems as though the Daily Mail action has been taken after police expressed concern about pursuing politically motivated criminal investigations in the area of MPs expenses.
While it is unclear as to what potential penalties may be imposed if private prosecution were successful, it has at least focused the minds of the individual MPs named in today's edition of the Daily Mail newspaper. It has also placed significant pressure on the UK police force to pursue and investigate a number of complaints from the UK public in relation to alleged expenses fraud.
The potential introduction of private prosecutions will ensure that MPs expenses remain very much headline news for some time to come and could effectively overshadowed the forthcoming European elections and next year's general election. Many are now concerned that some fringe parties in the UK political scene will benefit from the backlash against the Labour Party, Conservative party and the Liberal Democrat party.
