Competition commission has supermarkets in its sights

The UK competition watchdog has today revealed new plans which will effectively make it more difficult for prominent supermarkets in the UK to expand their operations in an area where they already have significant coverage. While the initial proposals were rebuked by Tesco, on the grounds that extending existing supermarkets should not come under the new legislation, there have been some tweaks with regards to the proposals to accommodate this particular issue.

There is no doubt that supermarkets in the UK have become stronger and stronger over the last decade and now have their fingers in each and every pie and every business market in the UK. From finances to food, from insurance to property and everything else in between, the UK supermarket sector is now "THE" sector of the UK economy.

While it will be very difficult for any regulator to break the stranglehold which UK supermarkets have on UK consumers, due to the fact that millions of them visit their premises each and every week, at least curbs on future expansion are now in place. There are very few areas of UK society which are not impacted by UK supermarkets with Tesco and Asda the two main players in the UK.
