British Gas announces end of estimated bills
British Gas has today confirmed it will be introducing a system which will eradicate estimated bills for those customers who would rather pay accurate bills each and every month. Research by British Gas shows that estimated bills, which can vary wildly over the year, are very unpopular amongst its 16 million customers and the company is looking to create a loyalty base for the future.
Customers who take up the offer of accurate monthly billing will also receive an energy use monitor which will enable them to submit their monthly meter readings either by e-mail or by text. It will also make UK households more aware of the energy they are using and perhaps more aware of the energy which they are wasting. However, so far there has been no news on potential price cuts in the short to medium term with the move towards more accurate monthly billing now grabbing the headlines.
Consumer groups are concerned that the company will use the enthusiasm created by the move to a new billing system to possibly mask any future price rises as we approach the winter period. This has been a bone of contention for some time, with energy prices across the board continuing to rise despite the fact that in some cases the wholesale price of energy has fallen in the short-term.
