Will MPs never learn?
Despite the fury over the MPs expenses saga, new receipts published today show that many MPs are continuing to claim for expenses which many people would consider outside of their working life. We have seen a defence minister submitting a claim for over £20,000 to repair a bell tower and the roof of this country home, we have seen Gordon Brown claiming £500 to paint a building in his garden (an amount which was later repaid by the Prime Minister) and indeed we have seen David Cameron over claiming on his mortgage interest, an amount which was deducted from his expense payment.
Despite the fact that voters were furious only a few months ago it seems that many MPs are still looking to claim as many expenses as possible. However, we have also seen a number of MPs showing some form of humility after entering no claims during the current financial year after being subjected to ridicule in the press after past "bizarre" expense claims.
While the government has now brought forward various laws and regulations regarding MPs expenses, there is no doubt that the UK public is still as sceptical today as it was only a few months ago. In many ways it seems that some MPs are unwilling to change their working lives and especially their expense claims!
