Is Asda offering the best value for Christmas?
A report by The Grocer magazine is today suggesting that Asda offers the cheapest "Christmas trolley" with a list of traditional Christmas goods costing £102.08, including turkey, Christmas pudding, champagne, batteries, crackers and cards. While the Asda "Christmas trolley" is £10.29 cheaper than the average of the large five UK supermarkets, the likes of Tesco and Morrisons are not too far behind with trolley values of £105.30 and £107.51 respectively.
While it is obviously depends what items you place into your "Christmas trolley" there is no doubt that competition on the UK high street and in supermarkets has never been more intense. With many reports suggesting Christmas 2009 will be one of the worst in recent times, primarily due to the economy, there are battles galore amongst the larger companies in the UK retail sector - leaving many of the smaller companies to do battle over the "crumbs".
We are seeing new offers from the supermarkets on a daily basis and hundreds of millions of pounds are being offered in savings to UK consumers. It is the same on the high street with retailers such as BHS, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, to name but a few, fighting it out for top spot and top takings over the festive period.
