Is the UK set for a new onslaught of wind farms?

Ambitious plans to introduce up to 6,000 wind turbines to the UK are under consideration by the UK government in a move which would see £75 billion invested in the industry and the creation of 70,000 jobs in the UK by 2020. However, it is believed that the vast majority of the 6,000 wind turbines required would be manufactured overseas with very little input from the UK in this particular area of the project.

While there is much scepticism regarding the power of wind farms, the UK government believes that up to half of UK homes could be powered by these massive turbines by 2020. However, it is very telling that while the UK government is very bullish on the surface, it has yet to attract the attention of any significant wind turbine manufacturers to the UK. Whether we will see the authorities introduced a number of tax incentives for companies to move to the UK remains to be seen.

It is ironic that the wind turbine plans have been announced today when 94 companies in the North West and Midlands had their gas supplies cut off because of a massive spike in the price of gas. Energy consumption in the UK is set to increase in the short, medium and longer term with the UK population set to grow significantly in the years ahead.
