We all need to be more vigilant regarding fraudsters

Yesterday's revelation that fraud in the UK costs UK consumers £30 billion a year, equivalent to £600 per person per year, has shocked many across the country. However, the assumption that this particular figure may well be conservative and erring on the side of caution is another factor which we need to consider. So what can we do?

Despite the fact we are in, or coming out of, a recession we all need to be vigilant and if we are approached about certain services and certain products without prompting these invitations, alarm bells should start to ring. The old adage "If it looks too good to be true then it will be too good to be true" is one that should be paramount in your mind when in these particular situations.

Do not forget that fraudsters are experts in preying on those who may have a lack of knowledge regarding the Internet, finances or may even be in financial trouble themselves. These are people who will come across as your friend until you sign a piece of paper and then suddenly they will disappear with your money and your dignity.

If you receive a cold call you are well within your rights to ask for their telephone number and call them back to make sure they are who they say they are. Self-preservation is the name of the game!
