£386 to watch a wedding

The average guest at a British wedding will spend a total of £386, with many people underestimating the amount they spend as it is spread out on gifts, outfits and pre-nuptial celebrations.According to CreditExpert website, stag and hen nights are the most expensive factor when attending a wedding, costing around £130 on average to celebrate the last night of freedom.Wedding gifts set guests back an average £70, while finding an appropriate outfit for the big day can cost as much as £64. Travelling to and from the wedding venue tends to cost £49 on average, while overnight stays tot up a hotel bill of £48. A further £26 will be spent on keeping the alcohol flowing at the reception after the ceremony.Unsurprisingly, as 20 per cent of people say that they often have to attend the nuptials of people they barely know, 16 per cent of those polled said they resent having to spend so much money. A further 44 per cent admitted that they resented the added cost of attending a wedding which was held abroad. As many as 1.6 million Brits have actually gone into the red in order to be able to attend a wedding, yet only 13 per cent of people said they would refuse to attend a wedding if it cost too much. "Weddings are a time to celebrate but it's clear that people are increasing their financial stress and spending money they don't have simply in order to be there," commented Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert."The cost of getting married and attending other people's weddings is often underestimated, but it's a significant outlay that often hits hardest those who are first-time property buyers or those still burdened by student debt."
