Dodgy builders cost homeowners millions

As many as one in ten homeowners are left to foot bills of over £1,000 for damage caused by builders, according to recent research. The study conducted by Abbey Home Insurance showed that as many as one in five people have had their homes damaged by builders, with the average cost of repairs being £224.Prasad Shastri, Abbey's head of insurance marketing said: "The potential damage that could be caused by rogue tradesmen is staggering, and we are encouraging anyone looking to hire a contractor to work on their home to ensure that they have a reputable background. "Using workmen who are less that reputable may seem like the cheaper option in the first instance, but you may not have an enforceable contract or any comebacks if the job goes wrong and that could end up costing a lot more in the long run."London seems to be the home of either the most unlucky homeowners or the worst builders in the country - with 26 per cent of those questioned having experienced a dodgy builder, compared with just 12 per cent in the north-west.The authors of the report warned that 48 per cent of those whose home are ruined have to cough up themselves, as most home insurance policies do not cover the cost of damage caused by builders.
