DIY food can save on bills
Those worried about the rising cost of living can go someway to soften the blow by growing their own food, according to one horticultural expert from an organic growing charity.Carrie Pailthorpe of Garden Organic has highlighted the benefits to be had by finding space to grow produce - either in the garden or an allotment - including the ability to lower food bills. She said: "As fruit and vegetable prices soar, growing your own will increasingly become the answer. It is more cost effective and a viable alternative to buying produce in the supermarket."Living in a flat and growing your own will not enable you to be self-sufficient but it will certainly remove the need for costly salad bags and fresh herb items from your weekly grocery bill."Figures from the Organic Centre for Wales estimate sales increased by £1,937 million in 2006.Further data shows the expanse of land under organic management has increased tenfold in the UK over the last decade.
