Sainsbury’s Online Superhighway Grinds To A Halt

In a move which has been more of an embarrassment than a real long term problem, Sainsbury’s has been forced to suspended orders and deliveries from its online delivery service after a serious computer glitch plunged the service into chaos. It seems that the problem first arose on Tuesday evening and ten thousand online shoppers have been left with no deliveries today.

The company has stepped into compensate customers with a £10 voucher, but bearing in mind that this can only be spent at Sainsbury’s, many customers are not happy!

However, the problem has brought the online food market to the attention of the masses and figures show that Sainsbury’s actually take 90,000 orders a week via their online service. Some analysts have put losses at up to £1 million a day, but there seems little likelihood of long term damage to the reputation of the service.

While Tesco seems to grab all of the headlines with regards to new ideas and services it is interesting to see that Sainsbury’s has quietly built up a substantial exposure to the online food shopping market. Those who have criticised the company in the past for being behind the times may well have to eat their words.
