MP Demands Congestion Charge Consultation For Drivers
Often described as a stealth tax by those in opposition it seems as though Manchester will be the next City to suffer the dreaded congestion charge. Plans have been formulated to charge £5 per vehicle to enter the City centre during peak times, but MPs in the region are up in arms about the very small number of motorists being consulted.
Those that know the region well will be aware that commuters from many surrounding areas travel to Manchester for work, but the council has only announced plans to consult those in the immediate vicinity. Lindsay Hoyle, an MP from the Lancashire region has trumpeted the cause of his local commuters, many of whom are already facing increasing travelling costs when travelling to work, and now look like being hit by further charges.
A motion has been lodged in Parliament and it seems as though there will be some form of discussion in the not too distant future. However, plans by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive to introduce the charge seem to have moved past the consultative stage with the system almost ready to go, when the green light is received. Can the great congestion charge train be stopped?
