What The Government Give To Car Owners, They Take Back

In a rather bizarre arrangement it has been announced, on the very same day the freeze on fuel duty was confirmed, that drivers in some areas of the UK will have the opportunity of using the hard shoulder in times of peak traffic. However, this will not be free and drivers will be charged £5 for using the emergency lane - yet another stealth tax on drivers?

The move to use the hard shoulder seems to be the favoured option of the government to alleviate the UK road log jam in many parts of the country. However, why is it that all of these schemes designed to help the motorist always end up costing the UK driving population more and more money. The government announced that this scheme would cost in excess of £6 billion to introduce, but with charges likely to increase year on year once introduced it would not take too long to payback the cost to the public purse.

Quite which area of the driving public the authorities think will have any surplus funds to pay for such a scheme remains to be seen with car road tax set to treble for some UK motorists.
