Sarin Set To Leave Vodafone Under A Cloud
While Arun Sarin leaves his role as chief executive of Vodafone next Tuesday it seems as though he will be leaving on a negative note with today's profits warning taking the market by surprise and sending the share price sharply lower. Even though Arun Sarin has not always seen eye to eye with all investors in the group there is no doubting that he has steered the company very ably through a very active chapter in the company's growth.
On a wider note the fact that the likes of Vodafone are seeing pressure on profits in Spain and the UK reflects the ever challenging economic environment around the world. There is also the fact that the regulators are looking to cut a number of customer charges, with so called roaming charges high on the list. The double whammy of the regulatory pressure and economic slowdown will see Vodafone profits for the first three months of the year come in at the lower end of expectations, around £40 billion.
In many ways the popularity of the mobile phone makes companies such as Vodafone a bellwether of the economy and offers an interesting insight into what is happening in the wider market place.
