Is This The Year Of The Discount Stores?
As news that both Aldi and Lidl continue to see substantial growth in their sales and visitor numbers it seems as though at least some in the UK are looking to save on everyday expenses. While the likes of Tesco and ASDA struggle to stand still we have seen year on year growth of 20% at Aldi and 15% at Lidl. The two have also recently announced plans to roll out their stores into more areas of the UK with literally hundreds of stores to be opened over the next couple of years.
The real test for these stores will come when the economy picks up and people have a little more money in their pockets - will they still be shopping at the likes of Aldi and Lidl, or will the move back towards the likes of Tesco and ASDA?
When people talk about the discount superstores of today they are often under the impression that there has been no change over the last 20 years or so. The truth is that the discount stores of today are almost unrecognisable from the ones in the past. The goods that they sell may not always match the higher value end of the market, but the image of years gone by is very much outdated.
