Police In Bid To End Pub Happy Hour
News that the British Beer and Pub Association has been forced to rip up what was hailed as a revolutionary voluntary scheme of practice has provoked an angry attack from police forces throughout the UK. The code was introduced to pubs and clubs around the UK only three years ago in a move to curb reckless practices and offers which often left many people very much worse for wear.
However the British Beer and Pub Association has taken legal advice and apparently been told that the code of practice was anti-competitive and illegal. The British Beer and Pub Association members between them serve 98% of all beer and spirits in the UK and are therefore very influential. Despite the British Beer and Pub Association asking members to abide by the old guidelines there are signs that many have already broken ranks and resorted to cheap deals to keep the money flowing.
It now seems inevitable that the UK government will look at bringing in an array of laws to ensure that traditional events such as the Happy Hour are banned although there is an argument that this again would be anti-competitive in itself. Quite what the government will actually do remains very much in the balance.
