EDF Plays Hard Ball And Prepares To Look Elsewhere
As the EDF / British Energy saga continues to roll on we have seen the first signs that the French company might start to play hard ball. The group has suggested that the UK is not the centre of their nuclear ambitions and they have many more alternatives around the world which they are actively considering. Is this a bluff or are they set to walk away once and for all?
Government officials are still suggesting that EDF is the preferred bidder for British Energy although quite how they feel able to dictate to shareholders of a public company is baffling many. At this moment in time the government seems to have discounted any possible offer from UK giant Centrica, again something which has caused something of a backlash in the markets and is unlikely to attract shareholder support for any proposals put forward by the government.
This has moved away from an energy price argument and more towards a case of the UK government apparently supporting a French based company to take the lead in the UK nuclear race. If Centrica is able to muster enough support from British Energy shareholders will the government risk alienating the investment community by continuing with its current stance?
