Report Claims That UK Drivers Pay £500 Annual Fuel Excess
A report into the state of the UK fuel sector has claimed that each and every driver in the country is paying a £500 a year surcharge compared to European counterparts. While the government is well aware of the difference in prices compared to other areas of the world there seems to be very little movement. But why is the UK so expensive when it comes to fuel?
The main difference between the UK and many other areas of the world is the fact the price of UK fuel is dominated by tax and VAT which adds up to around 60% of the price at the pumps. Petrol has, and continues to be, one of the more lucrative taxes in the UK for the government. The tax take just seems to rise and rise and even though a recent 2p increase has been suspended, actual tax receipts are rising as the oil price increases.
When you take a step back and look at the situation it is difficult to believe that the government still continue to increase the tax on fuel. Under the guise of a green tax they are hitting the UK motorist for more and more tax each year and refuse to consider a total revamp of the situation. Will the Conservative Party be any different if they obtain power at the next general election? Don't hold your breath.....
