Roll Up Roll Up For Gordon's Next Giveaway
It seems that Gordon Brown's plan to give more that 7 million families in the UK a £150 one-off winter payment to assist with the rising cost of living has been released into the public domain ahead of time. If the stories are correct it looks as though families who receive child benefit will be in line for the early Christmas present. But will this be enough to turn the tide?
The handout to the UK public is likely to cost the tax payer in excess of £1 billion and while it will be very welcome there is a feeling that yet again the government is attempting to buy votes for the next election. The problem now is that because of past strategies and PR gaffes, nobody really believes that the handouts are free of strings. For each pound which is given back to the UK public it seems as though increased charges bring in more than the handouts.
We have seen the car road tax debacle, we have seen the 10p tax flop and we have seen older people in the community receiving one off payments to help over the winter period. But every time there seems to be a flip side of the coin, or that is at least the perception that the UK public has built up.

Alistair Darling has today revised his budget deficit forecast for the next four years from £606 billion to £611 billion which is an increase of £5 billion on his forecast in early 2009.
