Is Wind Power Just A Fad?
News that Danish Group Vestas is looking to close down its wind turbine factory in Scotland has brought the subject of wind power back into the public domain. The Scottish government have been very vocal in their support of the wind power industry but this blow together with news that the UK government will not give wind turbine owners reduced rates for using the National Grid has knocked them for six. So is wind power being hung out to dry?
The Scottish authorities had only last year suggested that their target for Scotland was that 50% of the country's energy needs would be supplied by wind power in 2020. This target now seems well out of reach and while the government has not officially scaled back their hopes for the future it only seems a matter of time. So what next?
The blame game has already started with the Scottish government at war with Westminster blaming them for not rubber stamping a reduced rate for using the national grid. However, the UK government has hit back with claims that the industry needs to be self sufficient as any subsidies from the UK tax payer would be counter productive and only hide some of the cost.
