Tories Plan An Energy Discount Card
In the world of energy supply there are many ways in which you can reduce your bills including dual services and direct debits. However, the opportunity to reduce energy bills by using a direct debit payment system is not available to as many as four million in the UK who do not have bank accounts or withdraw all of their funds each week. Many of these people are paying up to £100 extra a year for the same service!
Shadow Chancellor George Osborne has stepped forward with Tory plans for an energy discount card which would be attached to Post Office Card Accounts. Prior to this move it was not possible to arrange a direct debit payment through the post office but the energy card will navigate around the issue and give energy groups access to automatic payments.
While the government argue that they have been in talks with the energy groups for many months about helping the most vulnerable of society we have seen little progress. Indeed the talk of a one-off tax on energy company profits would not benefit those who are struggling, only refill the empty coffers of the government.
Something needs to be done to help those struggling and it needs to be done now!
