UK Authorities Still Looking To EDF British Energy Tie-up
Despite talk that Centrica is ready to go with a merger plan for British Energy it seems that the UK government is determined to push through a merger with French giant EDF. Quite how the government feels that it can dictate to shareholders, apart from the fact it owns 35% of the company, is unclear but at this moment in time nobody else is even getting a look at the books.
There are rumours that the government is looking to sweeten the EDF deal with tax payer's money to ensure that talks can be concluded with an end result. If this were to happen it would leave the government open to claims of influencing a free market as well as putting millions of UK consumers in the grip of a major French company.
Many people overlook the fact that French utilities are protected by law so there would be no chance of a similar situation happening in France. Quite how a company which operates under a restrictive market can gate crash the UK sector is astonishing but then again, it the UK authorities are rolling out the red carpet can you really blame them?
