Can Gordon Brown Help You?
As the spin which is coming out of Number 10 and Number 11 Downing Street registers less and less on the UK voter's radar it seems as though Gordon Brown's new moves (expected later this week) to reignite the housing market and help voters cover their energy bills will have little or no impact. Many are now asking if Gordon Brown can still surprise the voter or if his hands are tied behind his back?
The problem that Gordon Brown has is that he cannot blame a former government for the economic mess the UK is in at the moment and he can't even blame a former Chancellor. The bottom line is the buck stops with him on all counts and he knows is, but can he pull one last rabbit out of the hat?
As public finances look set to weaken further over the coming months and the government seem more and more intent on throwing money at the economy (and the voter), something has to give. We have already been primed for a change in the debt formulae which Gordon Brown worked under for so long - something which in many people's eyes ruins what he has done over the last decade as Chancellor.
Whether he can pull a rabbit out of the hat remains to be seen but with finances tight the odds are very much staked against him.
