College Students Financial Assistance Is Delayed
First we had a delay in the marking of exam papers and now we have seen the collapse of a scheme which is designed to give those youngsters from low income backgrounds the chance to move on to further education. In an embarrassing move the government has been forced to confirm that the third party appointed by the authorities has seen a severe system crash leave the majority of 16 to 18 year olds without their Education Maintenance Allowance which works out at £30 a week. With colleges set to return in the immediate future many students have been left penniless.
To make matters worse it has also been announced that a helpline set up to assists students who literally have no income at the moment has crashed leaving people frustrated and angry. For many people this is the last straw having seen bungle after bungle in the benefits system over the last 12 months. As the government tries to encourage more and more people to go into further education, especially those from low income families, they are now being forced to depend on handouts from their colleges.
